United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit
William A. Fletcher is a Judge on the U.S. Court of the Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. He was appointed by President Clinton in 1999 and took senior status in early 2022. He graduated from Harvard College in 1968 with a B.A. in English History and Literature. He attended Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar, graduating in 1970 with a B.A. in English Language and Literature. He was an active duty officer in the U.S. Navy from 1970 to 1972. He graduated from Yale Law School in 1975. He clerked for Judge Stanley A. Weigel on the Northern District of California from 1975 to 1976, and for Justice William J. Brennan, Jr. on the U.S. Supreme Court from 1976 to 1977. He was a Professor of Law at the University of California, Berkeley, from 1977 to 1999, specializing in Civil Procedure and Federal Courts. He has continued to teach Federal Courts at Berkeley while a judge. He is fluent in French and has lectured at French universities in Paris, Toulouse, and Aix-en-Provence. He and his wife Linda Morris Fletcher live in Berkeley. They have three daughters and five grandchildren.
